Retirees Make their Case on Health Care; County Hears and Responds

Kern's retired members form new chapter of our union
Tuesday, October 27, 2009 - Retired members of SEIU Local 521's Kern County units met to discuss a new Retired Members Chapter of our union.

Local 521 organizing director Chuck Waide said it's important for retirees to stay involved, because they're still affected by union matters.
"Our retirement plans are under attack."
Waide also outlined the new proposed retiree dues structure and what the money would pay for. A committee of retirees created the proposed dues structure, which includes free membership for members aged 75 or older.
Lydia Canion, an organizer from our union's San Jose office, told members that they can join in rallies and actions alongside active employee members to help protect everything their fought for during their careers.
The Kern chapter will meet during the day on the first Thursday of each month, Canion said.
Brandi Madewell brought the members information on new medical, dental and vision plans available through our union that are designed to help retirees deal with their day-to-day needs.
"It was information we can use, especially about the dental plans," said Bob Henry, a retired member who worked for Kern County in the parks and fire departments. "I really approve of the idea of getting retirees together."
"It's nice to have the union thinking about the retirees and what our concerns are," said Nadine Limi, a retired court clerk from Kern County Superior Court. "I'm very worried about our health care and pensions."
